Audition information for CAPTIVATE ensembles.
Dance
The Commercial Dance Auditions are being held to continue leading representative dance ensembles within the Parramatta Diocese. We are looking for the best and most passionate dancers in our primary and secondary schools who are interested in working with some of Sydney’s leading choreographers to produce dance routines and sustained works of the highest standard.
CAPTIVATE will showcase these ensembles at major venues and other events including community festivals, sporting events and charity fundraisers to showcase their exemplary talent and help provide our talented dance students with pathways to professional and/or tertiary dance opportunities.
There will be a strong focus on dance techniques and performance quality for all participating students. Ensemble members may be given high profile performance opportunities which will give them direct exposure to the dance industry, government and arts community decision makers and dance employers. An opportunity not to be missed!
Who can audition?
Dancers who are passionate about their art and would like to join an ensemble dedicated to commercial styles of dance, especially, but not limited to Jazz, Broadway, Tap, Hip Hop, Streetdance and Funk.
The Commercial Dance Ensemble is open to Primary Students (Year 3-6) (NEW IN 2012) and Secondary students.
What happens at the audition?
The Captivate team will run this as a professional audition so students can get a taste of what it is like in the dance industry, the first of many valuable lessons learnt within the program.
You will be required to:
- Register – all students must arrive with completed and signed Audition Form, and have photo taken
- Warm up within a group
- Demonstrate a range of technical dance exercises
- Learn and perform a short routine (varying styles)
- Perform a short dance sequence that you have prepared (1-2 minutes) that you believe shows your ability in one or more of your preferred dance styles (with or without music – CD or iPod).
- Improvise or free form to music provided on the day
Suitable and appropriate dance attire including shoes for the style in which you wish to showcase is required. If students do tap they are to bring tap shoes.
For the warm up, technical exercises and dance audition dance wear must be close fitting and allow complete ease of movement ie leotards, crop tops, fitted singlets, tights, dance shorts for girls and trackpants, shorts, t-shirts, singlets for guys (NO JEANS) etc.
Remember to look the part. First impressions are important! Please ensure girls are to have hair securely and neatly tied back.

Music
CAPTIVATE offers the following leading practice ensembles for more advanced students:
- CAPTIVATE Voices (Primary)
- Chamber Choir (Secondary)
- Chamber Ensemble (Secondary)
- CAPTIVATE String Orchestra (Primary & Secondary)
These small ensembles provide an opportunity for more experienced singers and instrumentalists to explore a wider range of repertoire and performance opportuinties.
Chamber Choir rehearsals are held weekly in Westmead and Springwood. 3-day intensive rehearsal periods will be held for the Chamber Ensemble. Please contact CAPTIVATE for more information or to arrange an audition.
