After two years of training, nine teachers from the Diocese of Parramatta graduated as Reading Recovery teachers on Thursday 8 December, with another nine teachers successfully completing their first year of training.

Reading Recovery is an early intervention strategy aimed at Year 1 students who require additional support in reading and writing after their first year of school. Teachers trained in Reading Recovery provide daily individual instruction to students which is highly effective in reducing the number of students with literacy difficulties in schools.

The graduating Reading Recovery teachers have participated in assessment training, identified the Year 1 students requiring support at their schools and successfully implemented the program for these students. The teachers were rquired to meet fortnightly for 3-hour in-service sessions, and participated in discussions to share their observations and reflections on the program.

At the graduation ceremony held at Aengus Kavanagh Centre (AKC) in Rooty Hill, teaching educator and Reading Recovery tutor, Patricia Reilly said the program is a proven strategy to address literacy.

‘Reading Recovery provides students with personalised strategies to support literacy,’ said Patricia. 'It is wonderful to see these teachers graduate and a new group of teachers complete their first year of training in the program.'
