Federal Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Minister, Stephen Conroy toured St John’s Primary, Riverstone on Monday 19 February to announce the roll out of the National Broadband Network (NBN) to the area.

Accompanied by the federal member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland MP, Senator Conroy said that Riverstone would be among the first in NSW to access the NBN.

The NBN is an Australian Government initiative that was announced in 2007 and is expected to deliver high-speed broadband across the country. Senator Conroy said that it would take 12 months for the roll out in Riverstone to be completed.

‘In communities such as Tasmania where the NBN has already been delivered, we have seen prices of individual broadband plans go down significantly,’ said Senator Conroy. ‘One school has cited savings of $57,000 for connectivity.’

Executive director of schools, Greg Whitby, said that Catholic schools have already been using high speed wireless broadband through Catholic Network Australia but that he welcomes the NBN roll out.

‘The NBN will lower the cost of broadband and greater access to schools and families in the area,’ said Greg. ‘Schools being connected in the 21st century is as fundamental as electricity or water.’

In response to Senator Conroy’s announcement at St John’s, stage 2 student, Dominic Azzopardi summed up the possibilities presented by the new network.

‘It is amazing what a piece of technology can do,’ said Dominic.
