Athletic success runs in Jacinta’s family!

Catherine McAuley student Jacinta Rotunno certainly knows how to make a statement when it comes to throwing the discus!

The Year 9 student has achieved some great success in this sporting area both at school and at the Australian Junior Athletic Championships which were held in March this year at Sydney Olympic Park.

Catherine McAuley school development officer Jacqui Hamilton said Jacinta qualified for this event after winning the Under 16s Girls Discus at the NSW Junior Athletic Championships.

“Jacinta had already qualified thanks to her coming second at the All Schools athletic carnival late last year,’’ Mrs Hamilton said.

Jacinta is the youngest of four children and it seems athletic success runs in the family. Her sister Emily is a successful hammer thrower and other sister Olivia is a NSW All Schools pole vaulting champion.

Jacinta has been throwing a discus since she was eight years old. She was first handed a discus by her coach during one of her sister’s training sessions.

“My coach just gave it to me and I gave it a try, and I haven’t looked back since,’’ Jacinta said.

“I really enjoy the feeling you get when you are competing and the sense that you have achieved something good,’’ she said.

“At this stage I would like to see how far I can go with this, as long as I still enjoy it.’’

In October, Jacinta will compete in the All Schools NSW competition before heading over to Cairns for the Nationals in late November/early December.

Jacinta’s sporting skills don’t stop at throwing discus. She is also a representative netballer and a current member of the Blacktown City Council’s Shamrock’s Netball Club.
