Mt Druitt local Aunty Marie shared her emotional Stolen Generation story with St Clare's Catholic High School students as part of NAIDOC week and not only touched the hearts of young people, but teachers, too.

Aunty Marie said she was was taken from her mother at an early age and was raised by Scottish and Irish Australians, but had doubted they were her real parents.

“My skin colour always goes dark brown in summer, and mum and dad had blond hair and blue eyes,” she said.

It wasn’t until she was 56, that she made moves to find out the truth.

Through the help of Link Up, she finally found her birth mother, who had moved to the United States and was living in a nursing home.

“It was the biggest shock of my life when I met her, and there I could see someone who looked at me,” she said.

“My mum said, ‘I’m your mother, and kept saying ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry’ but I told her it was not her fault.”

Aunt Marie said after she was reunited with her mother, she called her every Wednesday until she passed away 10 years ago. Her ashes are at home, and Aunty Marie wants to be finally buried with her mum.

“The loss and trauma does not just stay in one generation, it gets passed down. My youngest son was very upset by all of this, even more than me,” she said.

Auntie Marie told her mother before she died that she was grandmother of 16 children and it was beautiful to reconnect after all those years.

“Every time I’d call the nursing home on Wednesdays, the staff told me she would cry.”
