Ava Foxe was frustrated because the boys at school would not pass her the soccer ball so channelled her angst into a brilliant speech on gender equality and is now the Voice of Youth 2017 champion.

Ava was one of six Year 6 students representing Catholic schools across the Diocese of Parramatta competing in the 31st Voice of Youth grand final at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Seven Hills on 20 September.

Voice of Youth is a public speaking competition for school aged students which is run across Australia and the finalists spoke on various topics including refugees; gender discrimination, autism and grammar.

Students were judged on their thesis statement, language, gesture, tone, pitch and overall effect and were asked about their hobbies and career ambitions.

The finalists were Claudia Jackson-Barratt from St Monica’s Richmond who spoke on the benefits of good grammar, Ava Foxe from St Angela’s Castle Hill, Kaitlin Antao from Holy Spirit  St Clair, who spoke on autism and Declan Rozario from Our Lady Queen for Peace, Greystanes talked about the funny side of growing up in an Indian family.

Other contestants also included Enya Sassine from Mother Teresa, Westmead who discussed the plight of a refugee, and Grace Wilson from St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens, whose topic was “A Day in the Life of a Ballerina’s Humble Toes”.

Voice of Youth host and Principal of St Anthony’s Primary School, Girraween Attila Lendvai said the speeches were outstanding and perhaps the “best he had ever encountered”.

The grand final winner Eva Foxe spoke up on girl power.

“I spoke on this issue because the boys wouldn’t pass me the ball when I was playing soccer, and I thought that’s unfair and I realised that it’s not fair for women on many other issues,” she said.

Social Justice prize winner Enya Sassine used her speech on refugee abuse to engaged the audience and receive a huge applause after she concluded.
