Xavier College Llandilo recently held a flannelette-fuelled Mufti Day to raise money for drought-stricken farmers. The fun fundraiser was the bright idea of Year 8 student Brock Mackenzie-Hillen!

Brock overheard a conversation between his dad and a close family friend, who is a farmer, and what he heard moved him to want to help the farmers doing it tough.

“Dad’s mate, being a farmer, didn’t have much, and the situation was so tough he had to put down 50 of his herd,” Brock said.

This inspired him to take action at school, discussing what he could do to help farmers like his dad’s mate with his teachers and Principal Michael Pate.

From those conversations, the school’s Drought Relief Appeal was born and on September 12, the school community dressed as farmers and enjoyed a sausage sizzle and line dancing.

“Brock also managed to raise $130 from a sausage sizzle at their local Bunnings with his dad one weekend,” teacher Katherine Edwards said.

“They produced posters for our fundraiser and got Coles and Woolworths on board to supply all the drinks and supplies for our sausage sizzle too,” she said.

Principal Mr Pate said the school’s Agriculture team has also adopted 10 lambs from a local farmer, in a bid to help farmers doing it tough.

“The lambs have to be bottle fed and the students have organised a rostering system to look after the lambs and their specific feeding needs,” Mr Pate said.

Brock said he was really happy to see his school community support his idea and that it “made me feel like I had done something good.”

Overall the school raised more than $3700 and their help for local farmers is ongoing.
