Six outstanding Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students were finalists in the Western Sydney Region NSW Training Awards. Winners Jordan Ciappara from St Andrew’s College, Marayong and Mark Doughty from McCarthy Catholic Trade Training Centre within McCarthy Catholic College Emu Plains will have their nominations submitted for consideration towards the NSW Training Awards in September.

Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta Executive Director Greg Whitby was thrilled by the strong showing from students across Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s network of 79 schools and two Catholic Trade Training Centres.

‘We’re so proud of these terrific young leaders,’ Greg said. ‘Not only have they gained real world on-the-job training but their professional approach to their studies has set them up to hit the ground running as graduates’.

Mark Doughty from McCarthy Catholic Trade Training Centre within McCarthy Catholic College Emu Plains was awarded 2017 School Based Apprentice of the Year Award for the Western Sydney Region. Mark, who works for Skyline Landscape Services Pty Ltd, studies horticulture (Certificate III in Parks and Gardens) through TAFE NSW. In the future, Mark would like to own and operate his own large scale landscaping operation.

Jordan Ciappara from St Andrew’s College Marayong won the 2017 Vocational Education and Training in Schools Student of the Year Award for the Western Sydney Region. Jordan studied Business Services, completing Certificate II in Business and organised his own work placement at the Credit and Investment Ombudsman. He has also mentored other students undertaking vocational studies and is using this qualification as a stepping stone to pursue a career in finance.

Finalists included Jared Abbott from St John Paul II Catholic College, Nirimba, Mitchell Elton from Parramatta Marist High, Kiera Kruger from McCarthy Catholic Trade Training Centre within McCarthy Catholic College Emu Plains and Valencia Lama from Loyola Senior High.

The prestigious event was hosted by comedian and vocational training advocate, Rob Shehadie at Lily’s Restaurant, Seven Hills on Friday June the 16th.
