UP to 40 parents took time out from their busy lives to gently, restfully, and prayerfully allow themselves a day of reflection at the Franciscan Shrine of the Holy Innocents in Kellyville.

Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta recently held its first-ever Parent Reflection Day. Some parents took the day off from work to enjoy the ‘Day Spa For The Soul’.

Convenors of the event, Tania Melki and Franca Bonserio, said the day was designed to reconnect people with God in an environment away from busy daily routines.

“We get so busy in our everyday lives it is hard to take a moment and see where God fits in with everything we do,’’ Mrs Melki said.

Mum's Zofia Gibas and Mina Leary enjoyed meeting other parents and spending time to reflect

“This is an opportunity for parents to meet other parents from schools within our Diocese and share some of their reflections.’’

Some of the parents expressed what a foreign concept it was to sit and spend some time “doing nothing”. Others recognised they get so busy they don’t even notice God’s presence in their lives.

Mina Leary who is a parent from Catherine McAuley, Westmead, said she took the day off from her work to attend and was so glad she did.

“I think it is a good idea to have days like this where we can relax and practise our faith in a nice setting away from our usual busy lives,’’ Mrs Leary said.

Zofia Gibas, a parent from Mary Immaculate Primary School, Quakers Hill said because she had only recently arrived in Australia, it had been hard to take time out and meet other parents.

“My son is in kindergarten and it is nice the school has days like this for parents to attend and be able to take some time for myself,’’ Mrs Gibas said.

Susie Boustani, a parent from St Mary’s Primary School, Rydalmere and St Patrick’s Marist College, Dundas invited along her friend Anna Talarico, a parent from a school in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Both said they found the day very relaxing.

“I have had such a beautiful, soulful and surreal time. I would recommend it to everyone I know,’’ Mrs Boustani said.

“I love how it was called a Day Spa For The Soul. I would love for our schools to do something like this,’’ Mrs Talarico said.

Sam and Maggie Fahmy, parents from our Lady of the Angels Primary, Rouse Hill, said we all need time to reflect and slow down in life.

“We have enjoyed the opportunity to take some time to get closer to God. We would definitely recommend going to a day like this to other parents,’’ Mr Fahmy said.
