Thank you for your support of the Executive Director’s Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s competition was remarkable with more than 1800 entries from students across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

This annual competition promotes literacy among students across the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta during the summer holidays and is a great way to make sure the learning continues during the school break.

Selected at random as winners of four iPad Minis, four lucky students visited the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta office recently to receive their prizes personally from Executive Director Greg Whitby.

He said the ability to read should not be taken for granted and wanted to congratulate the children for continuing on their learning journey throughout the recent holidays.

Nevan Fernando (St Bernadette’s Primary, Castle Hill) read The Selfish Crocodile and said he enjoyed reading the book because “the poor crocodile got into trouble when he was selfish…but he learned his lesson’’.

Natalie Nikolouzou (Mary Immaculate Primary, Quakers Hill), read the very popular book Diary of a Wimpy Kid and she said she found it “enjoyable, funny, long (I love long books), drama, incredibly silly (in a good way), cool and a way to enjoy reading’’.

Christine Muscat (Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park) read The Fault In Our Stars and described the novel as "a beautiful, realistic, romantic tale which captured all emotions in the literature, as the inevitable description of loss and helplessness was viewed with a twist of hope and love. It was a stunning read’’.

Owen Mitchell (Gilroy College, Castle Hill) read Alex Rider: Book 1 Stormbreaker and said "the book is amazing because it is full of action and suspense. I never wanted to put the book down. I would recommend it for kids over the age of 12 who liked the Zac Power series’’.

Thanks to our sponsors Teachers Mutual Bank for partnering with the Catholic Education Education Diocese of Parramatta.

We are looking forward to this year’s Executive Directors Summer Reading Challenge and receiving entries from students throughout the Diocese.
