Kiara and her amazing rug!

St Angela’s Primary Castle Hill welcomed State Member for Baulkham Hills Hon David Elliott MP at a special school assembly where he presented an amazing rug featuring a nativity design by Yr 6 student Kiara who was awarded first place in Minister Elliott’s 2017 Christmas card competition.

St Angela’s Yr 3 teacher Jasna Rubelj said the Minister was so impressed with Kiara’s artwork, it was turned into a rug!

“We are very proud of Kiara for winning the Minister’s Christmas Card Competition. It was a wonderful achievement to have her artistic skills recognised in such a special way.”

Kiara said it was a lovely surprise to have the artwork turned into a rug!

“When I won and received the gift voucher, I thought that would be the end of the Christmas card competition!”

The Yr 6 student said she loves art and is inspired by the great artists in her family, her mum and grandma.

“Being able to imagine the picture in my mind and then presenting it on a piece of paper is wonderful. I found out the theme was, The Little Drummer Boy, so I started brainstorming ideas in a sketchbook. I love nativity sets, so I thought I could combine the nativity scene with The Little Drummer Boy into one.

“When I found out that I was able to enter an art competition, I thought wow! I could win a prize by doing one of my favourite things.

“My mum and grandma are great artists, so I thought maybe if I entered the art competition, I could gain the experience I need so that one day I could be talented just like them.”

Mrs Rubelj said the school was delighted to have The Hon David Elliott MP present the rug at the school assembly and were so impressed to have an original rug made from her design.
