Ahead of National Science Week (13-21 August) McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains hosted a week-long STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) expo.

The expo saw over 350 Year 5 students from nine Catholic primary schools participate in engaging activities and demonstrations at McCarthy. These included F1 racing cars, co2 cannister powered paper model race cars, marshmallow projectiles and egg crash tests.

McCarthy Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning Michelle Deschamps said STEM is a significant component in the new HSC.

‘We thought it would be valuable to help build the skill set of the primary school students coming into McCarthy as well,’ Michelle said. ‘Through these STEM days we have tried to address all of the aspects of STEM: construction, racing, motion, speed, timing, angles and the science of safety.’

McCarthy Year 9 student Connor Fleming said he enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate his learning to the younger students.

‘It’s important for students to know that STEM is nothing like ‘normal lessons’, we are always working in a group and really get a chance to develop our teamwork skills,’ Connor said.

As part of the event, the Penrith Panthers Under 20 rugby league team visited the school to show their support and see the learning taking place. Team member Jarome Luai said the demonstrations were impressive.

‘The stuff we are seeing here today is very different to what I saw at school,’ Jarome said. ‘It’s impressive to see how well the students work together and this space seems very fun and creative.’
