Nagle girls blinded by science

15/3/2017

Nagle College students are focussing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) studies more than ever before thanks to a innovative curriculum introduced this year.

The College in Blacktown has introduced STEM studies for Year 9 students, who show an aptitude for science and technology and what to become engineers and scientists.

The students build robots, discover coding, learn how to use a 3-D printer and even travel to the US to participate in the NASA space camp.

Principal Delma Horan said her students were very gifted science learners and are breaking the previous trend in which boys excelled in STEM studies.

'Our girls just love science and are naturals at it. They are doing our school proud,' she said.

Delma’s comments follow the results of the 2015 NAP Science Literacy tests, which showed a small but significant gender gap has emerged – in favour of girls.

National chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA) Karen Spiller told The Educator that the national focus on engaging girls in STEM subjects 'may be bearing fruit'.

'According to ACARA, girls had a higher average score than boys in the 2012 national assessment of Science Literacy, but it was not statistically significant,' she said.

'Three years later, in the 2015 national assessment, that difference had become statistically significant,' she told .

'That is very encouraging, because it indicates there may be increasing engagement by girls with science.'
