Our True Blue sports stars shine

20/3/2017

Two students from St Columba’s High School Springwood and another from St Patrick’s Marist College Dundas have won the prestigious Blue Awards for their outstanding efforts in netball, cricket and Aussie Rules.

The 20th Annual Blue Award Presentation involves the presentation of awards and recognition of the top students in all sports from NSW Catholic Secondary Schools and Colleges. The evening was staged at St Paul’s Catholic College Manly in early February. Over 55 students were recognised on the evening.

Chelsea Loughrey from St Patrick’s Marist College Dundas was a member of the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Open Netball team in 2016.

Following her performance at the Schools Challenge Series in September, she was named in the New South Wales All Schools Open Merit Team. She was also a member of both the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges and New South Wales All Schools 15 years and Under netball teams in 2014.

Chelsea plays Wing Defence and Centre. She reads the play well and gets in a good position to intercept at the first ball. She steps up and dictates and denies space. She reads off others well and the combination between Chelsea and Kristen was impressive even though they had never played together. Chelsea also balanced and fed the circle well.

Chelsea has made an outstanding contribution to the school community throughout her time at the College. She was House Captain this year, assisting in the organisation of the College athletics and swimming carnivals. She has also represented the College in athletics, touch, Oztag and netball.

Ryan Hackney from St Columba’s High School Springwood first represented New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges and New South Wales All Schools in 2014 in 15 years’ age group.

In 2016 Riley continued his representation at NSW Combined Catholic Colleges with his selection in the 19 years’ team. Ryan’s contribution during this tournament was outstanding.
Ryan was a rock at the top of the order for the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Championship winning team. A left-hand bat with a great temperament.

He can break down any attack and proved he was one of the most reliable opening bats for many years. The New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges team won the New South Wales All Schools Championships in 2016.

Ryan is a modest cricketer with enormous talent - a brilliant fielder with a great arm. He has all the attributes to make it a long way in the game.

Brenna Tarrant from St Columba’s Catholic College Springwood is a talented Australian Football player who has represented New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges and New South Wales All Schools at the School Sport Australia Championships in Maroochydore.

During the New South Wales All Schools Championships, Brenna was a key player who had the ability to play both attacking and defensive roles.  She was a valuable contributor to the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges team winning the carnival.

At the School Sport Australia Championships, Brenna again played multiple positions due to her high aerobic capacity and versatility.

She is highly skilled and a tough competitor whilst always displaying a positive attitude and encouraging her team.

Brenna is a talented athlete who has also represented her school St Columba’s in the Girls Intermediate division for Triathlon in 2016.
