Parramatta students hit the books

Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students hit the books hard this Summer with 2469 entries in the Executive Director’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Executive Director Greg Whitby urged students to read as many books as possible and share why they loved them for a chance to win one of four iPad Minis.

“I’m so excited to learn that students really took up my challenge with gusto over the school holidays,” Mr Whitby said.

The secondary school prize winners were Paige Colgate from Caroline Chisholm College, Glenmore Park and Shannon Gibbins from Patrician Brothers’ College, Blacktown.

With 14 entries in the competition, Paige Colgate was the most prolific secondary school reader. Her winning entry was a review of ‘The 78-storey Treehouse’ by Australian writer Andy Griffith. “Like the rest of the series, this book is so much fun to read,” Paige said.

Shannon Gibbins read ‘Gold of the Gods’ by adventurer Bear Grylls. Grylls, best known for his extreme survival techniques, has written 20 books described by Shannon as “very exciting to read”.

The primary school prize winners are Xavier Parker from St Michael’s Primary, Baulkham Hills and Paula El-Ghossein from St Aidan’s Primary, Rooty Hill.

Kindergarten student Xavier’s winning entry was a reader called ‘The Big Kick’. Paula, in Year 5, read ‘Sound Off’ from the Camp Rock series by James Ponti. “I recommend the Camp Rock series to anyone eager to read,” Paula said.

Well done to all the eager readers who entered the Executive Director’s Summer Reading Challenge! This much-loved annual event promotes continued literacy learning during the Summer school holidays.

If you’re looking for a recommendation for your next read, popular authors in this year’s responses included Sarah Maas, J.K. Rowling and Cassandra Clare for secondary students and Roald Dahl, Sally Rippin, Jeff Kinney, Anh Do, David Walliams, Daisy Meadows, Aaron Blabey and the Geronimo Stilton series for younger readers.
