Patrician Brothers’ College, Blacktown celebrated the opening and blessing of their newly constructed and refurbished learning spaces, with a special liturgy and morning tea on Friday 10 June.

The $5.2 million learning spaces included the construction of new general learning areas and Technical and Applied Studies (TAS) facilities funded by the Australian Government under the capital grants program, and through local contributions from the Parramatta Diocesan school building levy and fundraising at the school.

Diocesan Administrator Very Rev Fr Peter G Williams, assisted by parish priest, Fr Peter Confeggi, blessed the learning spaces which were officially opened by Senator The Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Minister for International Development and the Pacific, representing the Australian Government and the Executive Director of Schools, Greg Whitby.

Principal, Santo Passarello welcomed the school and parish community and special guests including Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michelle Rowland MP; Member for Chifley Ed Husic MP; Br Paul O’Keeffe fsp and Br Peter Ryan fsp from the Patrician Brothers; Ian Baker from the Catholic Education Commission; and Kevin Connelly MP, State Member for Riverstone. Other guests included Darug Elder Aunty Edna Watson who provided the Welcome to Country; Caroline Hart, Architect from Stanton Dahl Constructions; representatives from Steve-Watt Constructions; and principals from neighbouring Catholic schools.

Very Rev Peter Williams said it was important to always remember that Christ provides the foundation for everything that happens at the school.

‘I know the learning community of Patrician Brothers’ will derive future benefits from the brand new facilities that will aid your learning,’ Very Rev Peter Williams said. ‘My focus is always that the school is well anchored to the cornerstone that is Jesus Christ, and that it is He who underpins and is the foundation for everything that happens at Patrician Brothers’ College.’

The Executive Director of Schools, Greg Whitby thanked the government for their contribution to funding and recalled the legacy of Bishop Daniel Delany, who founded the Patrician Brothers and dreamed of providing quality Catholic education for the young people in his care.

‘You are part of Bishop Delany’s dream and you have a responsibility now to make the most of the opportunities provided to you through your education at Patrician Brothers’,’ Greg said. ‘I know that the story you continue to tell will only see your school community go from strength to strength.’

Representing the Australian Government, The Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said she was impressed with the new spaces and recognised the quality learning and teaching taking place at the school.

‘Patrician Brothers’ is one of the fastest growing secondary schools in the Diocese and I am very pleased with these fantastic new facilities which I know will be well utilised,’ the Senator said.

Santo Passarello the new buildings would provide dynamic learning environments for the school community.

‘They allow for greater flexibility which in turn fosters collaboration and engagement,’ Santo said. ‘Ultimately this project has been about building the lives of the young men in our care.

‘Our constant and simple reminder is that we are here to grow in our faith and to learn,’ he said.
