Positive behaviour is encouraged at St Joseph’s

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Kingswood has welcomed its newest member of staff: Mama Joey!

Mama Joey is the school’s mascot for its Positive Behaviour Support for Learning (PBS4L) program.

PBS4L is a comprehensive, integrated whole-of-school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour which is about creating a positive learning environment for learning for the students at St Joseph’s.

Assistant Principal Lisa Howell said that the three PBS4L expectations the school is focused on are being safe, being respectful and being a learner.

‘’Improving behaviour and attendance at our school is very important to us, and this is one way we can proactively do that.’’

“Our recent launch of PBS4L at the school means the children can now put into use the positive behaviour skills we have been teaching them, and they will be rewarded for it,’’ Mrs Howell said.

As part of the program, students who display positive behaviour are given a special 'Joey Card' by their teachers.

’The idea is to collect the cards as a class and put them in a special box,’’ Mrs Howell said. “When the cards reach a certain level in the box, the students get a small reward. Once they fill the box, they get an extra special reward.”

Each class has shown their commitment to the program by signing a pledge which highlights they have promised to be safe, respectful and a learner.

The school’s approach is about students working together as a team to get a positive reward and recognition.

In keeping with this theme, during the program’s launch they enjoyed a day of team-building activities which included three-legged races, puppet making, working on puzzles as a team and iPad learning activities.

The PBS4L mascot Mama Joey and her joey will play a vital role in looking over the students to make sure they get rewarded for their good behaviour and keep their promise!
