Songs FOR a War Boy

St Thomas Aquinas Springwood Primary students wowed Wakakirri Story-Dance Festival state judges and have made it to the national finals by telling the inspirational story of African refugee and 2016 Australia of the Year Deng Adut.

From humble beginnings in Sudan, Deng was only six year old boy when he was forced to march to Ethiopia where he was later indoctrinated to become a child soldier. He was later wounded and smuggled out of Africa to Australia.

Arriving in a new land he suffered many hardships but persevered to learn how to read and write English and eventually graduated from university as a lawyer.

He now practices law in Western Sydney advocating for those in need including many in the migrant community.

The school was blessed to be visited by Deng earlier in the year where he recounted aspects of his story and of the power of education in his life.

Over the past 20 weeks the STA Wakakirri troupe, involving more than 90 students, teachers and parents and former students, has written, staged and rehearsed the show.

The team used school breaks at recess and lunch and even worked during the school holidays to hone the performance of Songs FOR a War Boy.

All those who witnessed the interpretation of Deng’s at the Riverside Theatre came away moved and inspired by their performance.

Songs for a War Boy earned the performance awards for excellence including, lead cast, group acting, theme/concept, set movement and staging, performance teamwork, Spirit of Wakakirri Award and best backstage crew.

St Thomas Aquinas also qualified for the following State Award for the Best Biographical History Story Award.

The school is the second in the Diocese to have been chosen as one of the finalists to perform at the Wakakirri Awards Night, which will be held at the State Sports Centre, Homebush on Tuesday 12 September.

We can all be incredibly proud of the students and their teachers for their achievement in this prestigious creative arts competition.
