Year 10 student, Manoa Ratubalavu from St Agnes Catholic High School, Rooty Hill was presented with the Local Aboriginal Student of the Year award on Friday 1 July 2016.

The Aboriginal Student of the Year is a new annual award recognising young people who demonstrate leadership within their school and local community.

Councillor Charlie Lowles OAM made the presentation at a whole school assembly on behalf of Mr Edmond Atalla, Member of Mount Druitt in the NSW Parliament.
The top students from the award nominations across NSW will head to Sydney in August to attend the Emerging Leaders Forum, where they will meet with Aboriginal, business and Government leaders.

Jarara Secondary teacher and award nominator Michelle Kennedy said the award was a great way to recognise young indigenous leaders in the community.

‘The award is a great way for young people like Manoa to be recognised for their positive contributions to their school community and to inspire other young people,’ Michelle said. ‘From all the feedback received from Manoa’s teachers and sporting coaches it was unanimous that he is definately leadership material.’

Manoa said it was a privilege to receive the nomination and award.

‘It is an honour,’ Manoa said. ‘I feel that it is really important that we celebrate our indigenous culture.’
