Year 5 students and teachers at St Michael’s Primary School Baulkham Hills welcomed Dr Paul Scully-Power, Australia’s first astronaut, for an “out of this world’’ learning opportunity.

Dr Scully-Power visited the school and shared his stories and photos from his time in space. He was selected by NASA to fly on the 13th space shuttle mission back in 1984.

The visit was perfectly timed for Year 5’s Project Based Learning (PBL) project called Space colonisation - a new beginning!

Year 5 teacher Carmel Shields said their driving question was “How can we, as astronautical engineers, design and create a space technology prototype that can be used to successfully colonise another part of the Solar System?”

“Our entry event 'week' included two major events: a blackout ‘see, think, wonder’ thinking routine involving space technology and a visit by Dr Paul Scully-Power,” Mrs Shields said.

“The blackout involved the children exploring different images and displays of space technology, using torches in a darkened space, and reflecting on what they could see, what it made them think and what questions they had,’’ she said.

“The visit from Dr Scully-Power gave them the opportunity to ask someone who had been in space about all their wonderings.

“Their questioning was amazing!”

The visit was made possible by Year 5 student Matthew Urquhart who is a relative of Dr Scully-Power.
