On Tuesday 20 September 2016, six Year 6 students from the Parramatta Diocese competed in the 2016 Voice of Youth Grand Finals.

Tiarne McCluskey from Our Lady of the Angels, Rouse Hill was named the winner of the competition choosing to speak about her love of barbecue sauce, with judges praising her unique choice of topic, language, gesture, tone, pitch and overall effect.

‘I have been preparing since the competition was first announced to my grade,’ Tiarne said. ‘It was so much fun preparing and practicing my speech and getting to know the other students as we progressed through the competition.’

Taylah Hodgson-Harvey from St Monica’s Primary, Richmond received the Social Justice award for her speech about child abuse and domestic violence. She said the competition was a great opportunity for students to have their voices heard.

‘So many children are going through this, and it is not ok,’ Taylah said. ‘I’m really passionate about this issue and feel it is very important to share this with students, parents and teachers, to hopefully have an impact in some way.’

Our Lady of the Way Primary, Emu Plains Assistant Principal and Voice of Youth Grand Final Host, Michael Mifsud said he was very impressed by the scope of talent in the 2016 Voice of Youth competition.

‘Once again the students demonstrated how we need to let them capture their spirit and energy, and express themselves,’ Michael said. ‘The talent was so impressive, everyone deserved to be a winner.’

All finalists from across the diocese participated and progressed through school, cluster and diocesan finals throughout the year to reach the 2016 Voice of Youth Grand Final.
