Students discuss the big issues with their local federal candidate

Housing affordability, university fees, women in STEM, the National Broadband Network (NBN) and refugee policies were among the top concerns for St Columba’s Catholic College students when their local federal candidate attended a special student leaders forum on Wednesday 15 June.

Labor candidate for Macquarie, Susan Templeman was invited to the Springwood school to hear from the young people in her electorate about the issues important to them in the lead up to the 2 July federal election.

Ms Templeman said she welcomed the opportunity for her to hear from students.

‘We had an engaging and interesting discussion about politics, the upcoming election and public policy this morning at their school in Springwood’, Susan said.

Year 12 student Liam Holmes, said it is important that the opinions of young people are heard.

‘It is extremely important for us as students to have a voice because we are the next generation and the future of Australia,’ Liam said. ‘It is always helpful to ensure that politicians are aware of what is happening in the local community and that it is reflected in their electorate.’

Student Emily Sparkes, also in Year 12, added that with many students voting for the first time in this election, it was informative to learn more about current policy.

‘When local candidates show an interest in us, and helping us understand rather than trying to promote their party solely, we are able to learn a lot from the experience and interaction,’ Emily said.
