As part of this year's NAIDOC Week celebrations, students from Catherine McAuley Westmead, in collaboration with the Jarara Cultural Centre, have created a stunning collaborative artwork titled 'Our River, Our Sky, Our Country, Our Story'.
Created by the school's Indigenous Strong Sisters group, the artwork honours this year's NAIDOC Week theme, '50 Years of Deadly,' celebrating five decades of recognising the strength, resilience and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Featuring 50 woven raffia circles, the piece symbolises the passing of knowledge through generations, while its three interconnected sections represent Country, waterways and sky. The Parramatta River, the Emu in the Sky constellation and the students' handprints all reflect a deep connection to culture, Country and community.
Now on display at Westfield Parramatta throughout the school holidays, the artwork is a meaningful expression of identity, storytelling and belonging, and will later be gifted to the Catherine McAuley school community.
Congratulations to the Strong Sisters and everyone involved in bringing this beautiful artwork to life π€πβ€οΈ
