As schools continue to respond to COVID-19, the caring community of Trinity Catholic Primary Kemps Creek has had student wellbeing in focus this year more than ever. Peaceful Kids is one popular program that the school provides to support students managing stress in times like these.

Principal Cathy Hey first trained as a Peaceful Kids facilitator because she wanted to find a practical way to meet the needs of students with anxiety or ‘big worries’. The 8 week mindfulness and meditation program supports kids in managing stress too.

“I say to the students that meditation is the same as training for a sport - you practise the skills regularly so when you need them, they come to you automatically,” Cathy said. “The Peaceful Kids sessions are a highlight of my week!”

Since introducing the program at school three years ago, more than 100 students have joined in. In fact, some students have come back to do it again - two or three times!

Some of the other initiatives to encourage student wellbeing at Trinity Catholic Primary Kemps Creek include a veggie patch, games room and sensory garden. The lush veggie patch has been a particular focus this year with teachers recognising the potential of this activity to centre and ground students through a challenging period.

During the COVID-19 home learning period earlier this year, online communication was also a really important way to keep in contact. Cathy shared daily video messages with families, featuring birthday wishes, a joke of the day and of course, prayer.

The beautiful prayer of St Francis of Assisi begins: “Make me a channel of your peace”. It is inspiring to see the Peaceful Kids program at Trinity Catholic Primary supporting students to do just that.
