Determined to ensure its students had an engaging end to their first full term of 2020 and didn’t miss out on traditional Book Week activities, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Wentworthville recently hosted an amazing two-week long Comic-Con event.
Term 3 was the first full term of school for NSW school students and many schools were wary of engagement levels, nearing the end of a year of considerable disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
OLMC Comic-Con 2020 was launched with the hope of actively engaging students in their literacy while reinforcing the importance of knowing the audience, having a clear message and understanding purpose in written and visual texts.
Comic-Con traditionally refers to a comic book convention but is now widely used to represent any event where participants dress up to represent fictional characters.
Complete with animation sessions, illustrator and author talks, LEGO masterclasses, an exhibition of student learning and much more, Comic-Con 2020 also offered great parent engagement through a Facebook Live Parade families could watch from the comfort of their homes or offices.
While all students experienced reading, analysing and composing comics, many seized the opportunity to transfer the Comic-Con experience into other key learning areas.
Links to mathematics and science were made through paper plane design and throwing competitions.
In creative arts, students learnt about comic-inspired artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and many grades integrated digital technologies in their projects.
It was all designed to support students in expanding their understanding of the different components, language features, modes and forms of literacy and their influence on audiences.
All classes experienced animation sessions where they were guided in drawing minions, ewoks and BB-8 from Star Wars, Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, the Incredibles baby Jack Jack and Pokemon character Pikachu.
A variety of authors and illustrators also visited to share their thought process and craft.
The force was definitely strong with the students as they revelled in representing and learning about their favourite characters.
After numerous postponements, the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week 2020 is now scheduled to take place from October 17 to 23.
