The Marist Learning Zone (MLZ) have a number of aboriginal students at Marist Learning Zone. So it was important for us to celebrate NAIDOC Week in a meaningful way.

The theme for the week was Always Was. Always Will Be. Executive Director of schools Greg Whitby said it is important to acknowledge that Australia always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

“This is all about justice for Australia’s First Nations people,” Greg said. “We’re working together for better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people through education.

Throughout the week, the MLZ literacy class, which begins each day for all students, had an indigenous theme.

Our daily prayer at 12 noon also featured aspects of aboriginal culture, spirituality or history. Each afternoon during NAIDOC Week, the day was topped off with a short activity, designing shirts, decorating artefacts or weaving.

NAIDOC Week culminated with a special celebration, where staff and students enjoyed a meal with bush tucker.

As part of its commitment to justice for Australia’s First Nations peoples, CEDP is developing its first Reconciliation Action Plan. In 2022, CEDP will also host the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Conference. Read more about the Reconciliation Action Plan.
