Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv and Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) have officially welcomed more than 100 beginning teachers, new school principals, and leaders into their new roles at the 2025 Commissioning Mass held at St Patrick's Catholic Church Blacktown.
The annual Commissioning Mass is a significant event, recognising and celebrating the vital mission of Catholic educators in shaping the lives of young people across the Diocese of Parramatta.
“The opportunity to be commissioned alongside the enormous cohort of young people starting their teaching career with CSPD was a profoundly humbling experience,” said Danielle Purdy, commissioned as the new CSPD Executive General Manager Learning Outcomes. “In talking to many of them after the Mass, their excitement at having ‘their own’ classes, getting their heads around planning and marking routines and making plans for sleeping and relaxing over Easter took me back to the time I started my own teaching career at St Monica's in Cairns.”
Bishop Vincent called for a renewed vision of Catholic education, one that is equitable, sustainable, and inclusive.
“What a joy and privilege it is to have you as colleagues, companions, partners with God’s plan for a shared destiny of hope for our people in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains,” said Bishop Vincent.
We are proud to continue the ethos of inclusivity and offer Catholic education for all, especially the disadvantaged.
CSPD Chief Executive Officer Jack de Groot extended his appreciation to the educators for choosing a career in teaching.
"Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese's new strategy, which was launched last year, is designed to enrich the lives of students through an education that upholds excellence, inclusion, and Catholic tradition," said Jack. "Key to this vision is a dedication to refining teaching approaches, supporting teachers in their professional development, and incorporating best practices in teaching. This focus makes it an exciting time for professionals in school-based education, as they engage in meaningful change and innovation."
“I'm so excited to be leading the planning underway to improve system professional development of our early career teachers and honour their choice to teach in the vibrant and dynamic Catholic schools of Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains,” added Danielle Purdy.
Jack also spoke about the vital role educators play in fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within their schools and communities.
"We take immense pride in the richness of our school communities, which are made up of families from diverse backgrounds, faiths, and languages," said Jack. "By embracing a strong sense of belonging and collaboration, you create an environment where every student and colleague can thrive and contribute meaningfully."
"I was deeply honoured to take part in the Mass and ceremony," said Julianne Regan, Principal Mother Teresa Primary Westmead. "It's an incredible milestone in my career. Being surrounded by school staff, CSPD colleagues, and my immediate family made the occasion even more special. I have always felt a strong sense of belonging within the system, and moments like these serve as a powerful reminder of the unwavering support and deep sense of connection we share."
Special guests at the Mass included members of the Curia, Fr Fernando Montano, Mons Ron McFarlane, Sr Patty Andrew and Directors of the Board Emeritus Professor Marea Nicholson, Maria Pearson and Greg Jones.
As these dedicated educators embark on their journey, the Commissioning Mass serves as a powerful reminder of the impact they will have on our students, schools, and communities for years to come.
