A teacher’s influence can extend far beyond the classroom.
While lessons, assessments and curriculum outcomes are an important part of education, some of the most lasting moments in a young person’s schooling come from the people who teach, encourage, challenge and support them along the way.
A teacher can spark an interest that becomes a lifelong passion. They can offer encouragement at a time when a student needs it most, challenge them to look at something from a different perspective, or simply be there to remind them that they are capable of more than they might realise.
This World Teachers’ Day, Parramatta Marist takes the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible teachers who contribute to the growth and development of our young men each day.

Our teachers do much more than deliver lessons. They create opportunities for our students to ask questions, explore new ideas, develop their talents and discover their strengths. They encourage our young men to persevere when things are difficult, to take pride in their achievements and to learn from the challenges they encounter.
Importantly, they help our students understand that education is not simply about what they know, but also about the people they are becoming.
At Parramatta Marist, this commitment is closely connected to our Marist tradition. Our teachers play an important role in fostering a learning environment where young men are known, supported and encouraged to grow in their Love of Work. Through their example, they help our students develop not only academically, but also in character, confidence, compassion and responsibility.

As HSIE teacher, Miss Hannah Khoury reflects, “As teachers, our role extends far beyond delivering lessons. Every student is known. Every student is challenged. Every student is supported to become the very best version of himself. Because education is about developing young men, not simply achieving results.”
Every day, teachers across our classrooms, sporting fields, laboratories, workshops and co-curricular spaces make a difference. Sometimes that impact is seen immediately. At other times, it may not be understood until years later, when a former student looks back and remembers the teacher who encouraged him to keep going, introduced him to something he came to love, challenged him to aim higher, or simply believed in him.
These moments matter.
The impact of a great teacher is rarely confined to a report, a result or a single school year. It can influence the choices a young person makes, the opportunities they pursue and the confidence they carry with them into the wider world.
Reflecting on the importance of this work, Principal Dr Gavin Hays explains, “In the Marist tradition, to educate is to love. Our teachers show that care through the high expectations they set and the belief they have in every young man. Doing this work well requires them to be consistent, persistent and insistent. Years from now, our students will remember the teachers who challenged them to aim higher, not because they had to, but because they knew their students were capable of more. That is what our teachers do every day.”

To our teachers, thank you.
Thank you for the time you give to our students, the knowledge you share, the standards you uphold and the relationships you build. Thank you for the countless conversations, lessons, activities, rehearsals, training, excursions and moments of encouragement that form part of each school day.
Most importantly, thank you for helping our young men discover what they are capable of and who they can become.
Your influence reaches far beyond the classroom, and your contribution to the lives of our Men of Marist will continue long after they leave the school gates.
Happy World Teachers’ Day to the incredible teachers of Parramatta Marist.
