It's finally time, your little one is starting "big school." Whether this is your first child starting school or you're a seasoned school parent, here's what to expect when you walk through those front gates.

1. A warm welcome

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by friendly teachers and staff who can’t wait to meet your family. Orientation is all about connection, helping your child see familiar faces, explore their new classroom and start feeling at home.

2. Meeting teachers and classmates

Children often get the chance to meet their teachers and some of their soon-to-be classmates. There might be songs, games, storytime or short activities designed to make their experience fun and familiar. You’ll also get to chat with staff about what the first few weeks of school will look like and see their classroom setup.

3. Exploring the school together

While you're taking in all the information, your little one will be exploring their new space, playing on the equipment, checking out the book corner and maybe making a new friend or two. Watching them get comfortable in their new environment is a joy. Seeing where your child will learn, play, and grow will help you picture their daily routine next year.

4. Helping your child feel ready

After orientation, keep the excitement going at home. Talk about the people they met, look through, practice opening lunchboxes and encourage your child to share what they’re looking forward to most. These small actions help build confidence and anticipation for the big day.

5. Getting the practical info

Orientation covers all the helpful details - drop-off and pick-up procedures, what goes in the school bag, library days and how the daily routine flows. Don't worry about remembering everything on the spot; schools are great at sending reminders as the year unfolds.

The Bottom Line: Orientation is designed to make this transition smoother for everyone. Your child will likely bounce with excitement or cling to your leg (also normal), and you'll leave with a much clearer picture of what the year ahead looks like.

And remember: every parent in that room is feeling some version of what you're feeling. You've got this. They've got this. It's going to be a great year.
