The annual Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence celebrates Year 12 students who demonstrate strong values of faith, service, leadership and learning, recognising their positive impact on their schools and wider communities.
Held on Thursday 3 September at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta, the celebration brought together award recipients and their families, school representatives, staff from Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) and special guests, including Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Fr Robert Riedling, Dr Hugh McDermott MP, State Member for Prospect, and Councillor Todd Carney, Mayor of Penrith.
The evening recognised students whose lives and actions reflect a deep commitment to their Catholic faith, leadership, compassion and care for others, academic excellence and a desire to make a positive difference in the world.
Students were nominated by their school in acknowledgement of their contributions across a range of areas, including social justice initiatives, liturgy and prayer, peer mentoring, community service and student leadership.
CSPD Chief Executive Officer Jack de Groot congratulated the recipients, highlighting that the awards recognise more than individual achievements.
“Each of you has been chosen by your school because you represent something bigger than one achievement,” said Jack. “You represent the values we seek to nurture in every student. You demonstrate that excellence can be seen not only in what you achieve, but in who you are becoming.”
In his address, Bishop Vincent highlighted the important contribution young people make to the Church and wider community through their faithful response to God’s call, encouraging students to continue using their gifts in service of others.
“The honour we bestow on them tonight recognises not only what they have done but also the positive attitude with which they have imbued their environments and relationships,” said Bishop Vincent. “It is not so much the quantity of their deeds or their results but the quality of their commitment.”
The evening was a fitting tribute to who these young people are becoming and the values they will carry with them beyond their school years.

🏆 CELEBRATING VET EXCELLENCE! 🎓 As part of National Skills Week, the 12th Annual Rotary Youth Vocational Education Awards brought together schools from across Western Sydney to celebrate students and teachers who are excelling in Vocational Education and Training (VET). With 97 students and 12 teachers from our schools recognised, the evening was a wonderful celebration of the skills, dedication and determination helping young people build meaningful pathways for their futures. 👏 From Business Services and Construction to Hospitality, Fitness, Information and Digital Technology, Sport Coaching and more, students were recognised across a diverse range of vocational areas. 🛠️💻 CSPD VET and RTO Leaders joined school leaders, teachers, students and families to celebrate the achievements of this year’s award recipients and the important role VET plays in preparing young people for life beyond school. 👕💙 JERSEY DAY! 👕💙 Our school communities traded their uniforms for their favourite jerseys last Friday to get behind Jersey Day and help shine a light on the life changing gift of organ and tissue donation. Inspired by the story of Nathan Gremmo, Jersey Day encourages families to have meaningful conversations about organ donation and the difference one decision can make in the lives of others ❤️ 👕 St Patrick’s Marist College Dundas welcomed Richard Gremmo to speak with the College community about the importance of organ and tissue donation. ⭐ Marian Catholic College Kenthurst staff and Year 12 students took to the court for a fun and spirited volleyball match. 👕 St John XXIII Catholic College Stanhope Gardens combined Jersey Day with their Father’s Day Liturgy to celebrate dads and father figures. ⭐ Good Shepherd Primary Plumpton got into the spirit with a photo booth and soccer on the screens at lunchtime. 👕 Parramatta Marist High proudly wore their jerseys to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage conversations about giving the gift of life. WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO PUT FAITH INTO ACTION? 🤔 Year 8 and 9 students from across our high schools came together for LIFTED GO to explore this question, inspired by the 2026 Social Justice Statement, The Cost of Our Living: Economic and Social Justice for the Common Good. Students heard from Jesuit Social Services about the realities of financial hardship in Western Sydney and considered how they can make a difference in the lives of others.
