2020 St Francis of Assisi Primary Garden

Students at St Francis of Assisi Primary Glendenning are getting into gardening, creating a beautiful place to read and learn in the school playground. This fun new feature is the result of a project that saw Year 3 writing to Bunnings to seek support for the project.

Principal Jenny Bellenger is so proud of the initiative students showed, as well as their hard work on the shovels!

“St Francis of Assisi Primary has always been a great place to learn and grow,” Jenny said. “This peaceful new place in the playground makes it even more so!”

Putting their persuasive writing skills to the test, the students were successful in securing the support of Marsden Park Bunnings. Not only did Bunning provide a generous donation of plants, rocks, gardening gloves and equipment, they also included a bench seat where students can sit and read.

With the help and hard yakka of Mrs Attard and Mr Saad, the keen young gardeners got to work digging, separating, positioning and planting. Students chose beautiful “Stars of Bethlehem” or agapanthus flowers which are currently thriving. Native plants also feature for their hardiness, including “Kangaroo Paw”. In 2021, students have plans to ‘branch out’ into more edible plants.

In the spirit of St Francis of Assisi, one keen student gardener has commented: "I love that it helps to make things for others". Mrs Attard has really been enjoying the results of her hard work too, commenting: "It's a great afternoon reward for calming, creativity and life skills".
