In our Primary School program CAPTIVATE specialist teachers co-construct and support the delivery of syllabus outcomes in the creative arts by working in collaboration with generalist classroom and CAPA specialists teachers to embed creative arts learning into class programs, build teachers’ skill base and further extend the work in schools.

Drama Literacy

Primary Drama Literacy - CAPTIVATE Creative and Performing Arts

Drama Literacy is an approach to developing oral language and inferential comprehension skills using creative role-play

Students explore and respond to texts through interactive learning experiences designed to fire their imaginations, build their expressive language skills and foster an environment of inclusive collaboration with their peers.

Participating teachers are capacity built by working with specialist teachers in their classrooms, undergoing extended mentoring in the delivery and programming of Drama-based literacy sessions

Delivery:

  • 2 x Personalised Learning Days off site
  • Weekly 1 hour in class session with class teacher participating.
  • Weekly 15 min 1:1 planning/debrief session

  • Full year with weekly Personalised Learning, then ongoing delivery by class teacher

Creative Drama Workshop

Half Day or Full Day workshops for individual classes or stages.

Students explore communication, focus and creativity through drama games, improvisation, physical embodiment and storytelling.

Drama Performance Support

CAPTIVATE teacher will support teachers in the creation and rehearsal of a school based performance.

Suitable for special assemblies and events or any drama initiative within the school.

Public Speaking

Individual or group workshops for school leaders, students preparing for Voice of Youth or any student or class needing Public Speaking support.

The program can be a one off session of 2 hours or a series of 1 hour sessions.

Students will learn about composure, sending a strong message, connecting to their voice and being an engaging authentic speaker.

Dance Performance

Weekly delivery of a performance dance program to individual classes within a school. This can be for a specific grade/stage or the whole school. These programs link into the Dance and PDHPE outcomes.

Wired For Sound

Anita Collins is a leading researcher and advocate for the cognitive benefits of genre-specific music learning.

She has evidence-based research showing causal and strong correlation between structured music learning and cognitive development, especially language development allowing her to claim Music builds “bigger and better brains” and improves NAPLAN scores.

The Primary program will be designed for any generalist teacher to implement through a once a day 10 minute session, five days a week as a primer to the literacy session.

Delivery:

  • Daily 10 min prima before the literacy hour
  • Personalised Learning: 3 full days off site (T1, 3, 4)
  • 1/2 day in individual school (T2)
  • Completion of a weekly reflection log

Drumming

Primary Drumming - CAPTIVATE Creative and Performing Arts

Working with small groups of 6-8 students for 30 mins weekly to build their confidence and music knowledge through drumming. We have also created a program based on rhythm to recovery which then becomes a more therapy approach to the program which we are able to deliver to small groups if requested.

Classroom Band

Primary Classroom Band - CAPTIVATE Creative and Performing Arts

CAPTIVATE Specialist Teacher delivers classroom band program with the class teacher participating.

The program can begin with year 4 initially and then move to years 4 & 5 the following year. This program delivers the listening and performance outcomes and we support the classroom teacher to deliver the composition outcomes based on the program.

Please note: This program requires planning to set up an instrument library and when students complete the program they can then go into a user pay instrumental lesson program.

Classroom Strings

Primary Strings - CAPTIVATE Creative and Performing Arts

The Classroom String Program is a classroom-based foundation method in string playing. Schools invest in a class set of instruments in the first year with CAPTIVATE providing the tutors and teaching resources for the delivery of the program. The program is taught in class streams and ideally is begun in Year 3 however, it can start in either Year 3, 4 or 5 (not Year 6). Individual and small group lessons outside of the classroom program are also available on a modest user pays basis.

CAPTIVATE provides professional tutors to build the skills base of generalist classroom teachers and/or music specialists within the school. This is subsidised in the first year. Support, follow-up and professional development is provided continually throughout the delivery of the program.

This program runs throughout the school year and culminates in a performance evening ‘Exhibition’ for school communities in Term 4.

Visual Arts Skills Building

Generalist classroom teachers complete a 2 day PL session where they will explore a variety of visual arts techniques and program to deliver some of these to students during the term.

  • 2 x face to face consecutive workshops

Visual Arts Whole School Personalised Learning Workshop

A whole day PL providing on site workshops for Primary Teachers exploring and experimenting with a broad range of art making mediums. Provide training in historical and critical analysis of artworks as well as investing ways to create innovative and meaningful programs. Teachers will also learn how to embed Visual Arts across all KLA’s as a vehicle for deep learning engagement strategies for their students.

Digital Arts/ Photography

A series of exercises that focus on digital art, photography and creativity in the classroom. A reimagining of art education where digital tools and online resources optimise student creativity and enhance artmaking.

This program empowers students to express themselves by creating their own works of art with the assistance of digital technologies culminating in a virtual exhibition and/or student portfolios.

Digital Literacy

This program has a focus on design elements/principles and how meaning is made in visual texts. It encourages metacognitive thinking about design choices when presenting information and equips students with a range of transferable skills and strategies for interpreting or creating visual texts which can be applied to a range of Key Learning Areas.

Video Literacy Skills

Video media is an increasingly significant mode of text composition, one that combines visual, oral and written literacies in a form that is authentically connected to students' online worlds. This professional development is designed to support teachers seeking to enhance their literacy programmes with video composition in Stage 1.

For Stage 1 teachers, activities centre around the production of short-form multimedia texts combining photography, simple drag-and-drop editing and recorded student narration. Teachers can experiment with simple video making apps to take back to their classrooms and integrate into various KLAs. Teachers will work in pairs to produce short multimedia compositions. Texts will be filmed and photographed on the iPad Camera app and edited using Apple Clips and Story Creator software.

Video Literacy Program

Video media is an increasingly significant mode of text composition, one that combines visual, oral and written literacies in a form that is authentically connected to students' online worlds. This professional development is designed to support teachers seeking to enhance their literacy programmes with video composition in Stages 2 and 3.

For Stage 2 & 3 teachers, the programme is embedded in a weekly literacy session over two terms.

CAPTIVATE teacher works alongside generalist teacher(s) exploring and demonstrating video making skills with students. Over the first term, areas covered include composition, shot styles, story mapping, performance and editing. During the second term, these skills are consolidated into a larger, documentary-style project linked to student learning in another KLA.

  • 2 PL days: co-construct program with teacher for the term
  • Weekly lesson: CAPTIVATE teacher attends weekly sessions with teacher and class where CAP teacher delivers the program supported by the class teacher
