A combined Catherine McAuley Westmead and Parramatta Marist High team recently competed in the National Final of the Formula 1 in schools competition. The team, known as PRISM, consists of Jared So, Natasha Muttoo, Ethan So and Diederik Lubbers worked together in a bid to develop the world’s fastest miniature Formula 1 car.
The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge is the world’s foremost student competition for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Each year more than 17,000 schools in 52 nations take part and in Australia approximately 22,000 students are involved.
Mimicking the world of a Formula One team, groups of students have to follow a pathway of engineering and manufacturing disciplines: design, analyse, test, make and race. They are provided with access to real-world technology such as 3D CAD/CAM/CAE engineering design software and soon become proficient in areas such as Coding, Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis. The program helps to develop in students the skills of problem solving, project management, communication, presentation, teamwork, innovation, self-promotion, collaboration, marketing and entrepreneurialism.
The Australian National Final racing days were held on 22nd and 23rd April and last Friday on 30th April the team participated in an online team interview with the judging panel. They were judged on their verbal presentation; engineering - manufacturing; engineering - CAD and their trade display.
Results of the final will be released by the 12th May and given Team PRISM has been working on this project for around 16 months they are eagerly awaiting the results. “We really hope to progress to the next stage of the competition and represent Australia at the world finals in June”, says Natasha.

LEARN 💭, LISTEN 👂, LOVE ❤️ Stage 3 students from St Monica's North Parramatta participated in a memorable Immersion Day that focused on instilling the 3 L’s - Learn, Listen, Love. 🥰 The day commenced with the students listening to a talk from Roydon, a guest speaker from Vinnies NSW, who shared powerful insights about the challenges faced by those most vulnerable in the community, and what we can do to help. 🤝 The Year 5 students enjoyed spreading kindness at a local nursing home, whilst the Year 6 students visited their local Vinnies store and helped load the bus with the generous donations gifted by the St Monica’s school community - over a whopping 1,000 first aid kits were donated to those in need! 👏 🙌 The Immersion Day was a wonderful reflection of faith in action and demonstrated the power of community! 🙏❤️ REMEMBERING BISHOP KEVIN MANNING 🙏❤️ Today marks one year since the passing of Bishop Kevin Manning. Appointed as the second Bishop of Parramatta in 1997, he faithfully led the Diocese for over 12 years until his retirement in 2010. As the communities across Western Sydney and Blue Mountains expanded, Bishop Manning helped shape the identity of Australia’s youngest diocese. ⛪ Respected across Australia, Bishop Manning oversaw the rebuilding of St Patrick’s Cathedral after the 1996 fire and remained deeply committed to those on the margins of society. Throughout his ministry, he championed justice for workers, First Nations peoples, migrants and refugees, women, children and young people.
